This calculator is designed for relatively simple businesses and organizations. It measures the number of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) required to match your annual electricity use with electricity generated from renewable resources. If you need to measure the electricity use of a more complex business (including those with overseas operations or multiple facilities) please complete our consultation request form to obtain customized support.

what you will need to complete the calculator:

You will need ONE of the following—If you have this information available, this calculator should take about 5 minutes to complete:

The annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) for each business facility you wish to calculate;

OR The building type and total square footage occupied for each business facility you wish to calculate.

why does my calculator show data that is already entered?

If your browser's cookies are enabled, the site will keep track of any data you've entered in a single session. To reset your calculation at any time, simply click the "RESET CALCULATOR" button in the banner above and all session data will be removed. If you don't see the "RESET CALCULATOR" button above, this means that no previously-entered data has been recorded.

measure first, then match your use

At the end of the calculator, you will be presented with your estimated electricity use and a recommendation to match all or a portion of your use with Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from BEF. Each REC represents renewable energy sources such as wind, solar or biogas projects where clean energy has been delivered to the North American power grid to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel-based electricity. One REC represents the non-power environmental attributes of 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt hour) of renewable energy.
