City of Ashland Renewable Energy Option

City of Ashland Renewable Energy Option

Store logo greene

The City of Ashland has partnered with BEF to provide a tool for Ashland residents and businesses to participate in the environmental benefits of wind power generated throughout the Pacific Northwest. BEF Green Wind RECs are Green-e Energy certified, and meet the environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.

What it is:

  • Green-e Energy Certified BEF Green Wind RECs represent wind energy from Pacific Northwest projects.
  • 1 block of BEF Green Wind RECs = 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
  • BEF Green Wind RECs are priced at $1.50 per block (1 block = 100 kilowatt-hours).

How it works:

  • You will need access to your business’ electricity usage for one year to determine this figure. You can find this at https://ashland.merchanttransact.com/ or by calling the City’s Utility Billing office at 541-488-6004
  • Your total fee is determined by estimating the quantity of electricity your business uses annually, thereby determining how many blocks you need to purchase.
  • You can use the following formula to figure out how many blocks to purchase annually:
  •  Annual kilowatt-hours divided by 100 = Number of Blocks
  • After your purchase, your business will still receive a separate power bill from its utility.
  • BEF will deliver your Renewable Energy Certificate by email.
  • Your business can pay your annual fee in a single payment, 12 monthly payments, or 4 quarterly payments.

How does this help Ashland’s community emission reduction goals?

  • The recently approved Ashland Climate and Energy Action Plan contains a goal to meet an 8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions each year through 2050. This goal is in place to meet the science-based target of Ashland’s share of emissions reductions required to return the global atmosphere to a level of 350 parts per million(ppm) or less (just recently passed the 400 ppm level)
  • This goal is in place to meet the science-based target of Ashland’s share of emissions reductions required to return the global atmosphere to a level of 350 parts per million(ppm) or less (just recently passed the 400 ppm level)
  • The plan also includes support of cleaner energy resources as a strategy to help reach its goals.
  • For more information on local actions, check out the Ashland Climate and Energy Plan project page and final document at www.ashland.or.us/climateplan

more on how it works

While you can’t literally plug into a power outlet and receive electrons from a wind turbine located far from your home, you can own the environmental benefits of a specific quantity of power produced from a zero-emissions wind energy facility. When you enroll in the BEF Renewable Option program, you are purchasing the environmental attributes of electricity generated from wind facilities in the Pacific Northwest. Your dollar helps support the development of renewable energy facilities in your region.

A robust accounting system ensures that only you own the specific wind energy attributes you’ve purchased. BEF provides proof of your purchase by delivering you a certificate by email, identifying the specific facility from which your REC was generated.

Your purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is supporting electricity production in the Pacific Northwest. You will continue to receive a separate electricity bill from your utility (if applicable). For every unit of renewable electricity generated, an equivalent amount of RECs is produced. The purchase of RECs helps offset conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable electricity generator is located. The purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits such as reducing global climate change and regional air pollution. For more information about RECs, please visit www.green-e.org.

additional information about renewable energy certificates (RECs)

When a renewable energy facility operates, it creates electricity that is delivered into a vast network of transmission wires, often referred to as “the grid.” The grid is segmented into regional power pools; in many cases these pools are not interconnected. To help facilitate the sale of renewable electricity nationally, a system was established that separates renewable electricity generation into two parts: the electricity or electrical energy produced by a renewable generator and the renewable “attributes” of that generation. The renewable attributes or “green” attributes can be sold separately as renewable energy certificates (RECs). Only one certificate may be issued for each unit of renewable electricity produced. The electricity that was split from the REC is no longer considered "renewable" and cannot be counted as renewable or zero-emissions by whomever buys it.

This product is comprised of RECs. With the purchase of RECs, you are buying the renewable attributes (i.e. environmental benefits) of a specific amount and type of renewable energy generation. You will continue to receive a separate electricity bill from your utility (if applicable). Your purchase of renewable certificates helps offset conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable generator is located. Your purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits such as reduced regional air pollution and global climate change.

The Renewable Energy Certificates in this product are certified by Green-e Energy. Each supplier of Renewable Energy Certificates is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate. Please see the Product Content Label (shown when you add this product to your cart) for this information. Green-e Energy also verifies that the Renewable Energy Certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party. For information on Green-e Energy please visit its website, www.green-e.org.

types of REC projects

The project types described below represent the diversity of projects that could make up BEF's REC portfolio. They are provided as information only to help inform our customers about where and how RECs are generated. View our current wind project portfolio online now ::

WIND ENERGY—Also called “wind power,” wind energy is electrical power generated from a wind turbine.

SOLAR ENERGY—The conversion of light into an electric current.

BIOGAS—Biogas is an energy resource produced by capturing methane through a process called anaerobic digestion. Methane can come from any facility in which plant or animal matter is decomposing. Biogas renewable energy projects are most commonly operated on dairy farms that capture methane and convert it into energy that can be used to replace other fuels such as natural gas (commonly used for heating buildings).

LANDFILL GAS—Landfill-gas-to-energy (LFGTE) projects capture methane gas for electricity and heat, turning a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) into a beneficial source of renewable energy.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY—Geothermal energy is the natural thermal energy that is generated and stored in the Earth.

quick facts about the Renewable Option RECs program

Q: What is “clean, renewable energy,” anyway?

A: Renewable Energy is energy derived from natural resources (such as sunlight, wind, geothermal heat, etc.) and which supply is naturally replenished. “Clean” energy is energy that doesn’t pollute the atmosphere, unlike fossil fuel-based energy that releases carbon dioxide. Investments in clean, renewable energy support energy independence, create jobs and reduce human impact on the environment.

Q: Do I have to sign a contract?

A: No. You can sign up or cancel any time at BEF’s business website at b-e-f.org/renewableoption.

Q: Will I receive a bill?

A: No. The Renewable Option program is separate from your utility power bill. Once you’ve enrolled in BEF’s Renewable Option program, BEF will charge your credit card monthly, quarterly, or one single payment depending on your payment selection..

Q: Will I receive a renewal notification?

A. Yes. You will start receiving email renewal notices three months in advance to sign up for another year.

Q: How does my purchase benefit the environment?

A: Your purchase helps support renewable energy, which displaces electricity generated from fossil-fuel resources.

Q: How else can I reduce my business’ energy use?

A: BEF advises you to maximize the energy efficiency of your business wherever possible. After all, the greenest energy is the energy you don’t use.
